What it does

Guides Directors and senior product leaders through the transition to VP or CPO using adaptive questions and targeted coaching. Diagnoses where you are in the journey and delivers practical, lived-experience coaching calibrated to your situation.

How it works

This is an interactive skill that starts by having the user identify their current phase (Preparing, Evaluating, Newly landed, Recalibrating). It asks up to 1 diagnostic question plus up to 3 adaptive follow-up questions, then delivers 3–5 enumerated, targeted recommendations based on the user’s situation. It follows a predefined session structure (Session Start) with a choice of how to run the session: Guided, Context dump, or Best guess. The first question determines the branch (Preparing, Evaluating, Newly landed, Recalibrating), and each branch further asks domain-specific questions (e.g., Three Ps, executive dynamics, early-stage alliance building). Recommendations are generated per branch, often including actionable steps like observing the VP/CPO’s Three Ps lens, building executive relationships, or evaluating unwritten strategy and alliance dynamics. It references related content for certain prompts (e.g., CEO interview questions located in another skill’s file) and emphasizes calibration to executive-level constraints and business outcomes.

When to use it

Use when transitioning to VP or CPO roles, especially when executive product scope is changing fast. Suitable for:

  • Preparing for the Director-to-VP or VP-to-CPO transition
  • Evaluating or interviewing for VP/CPO roles
  • Newly landed in a VP or CPO role (first 6 months)
  • Recalibrating when something isn’t working in an executive product role

What it can touch

This skill uses the tool set defined as: claude-code. It operates as an interactive advisory, prompting user responses and delivering structured recommendations. It assumes the availability of the underlying branching content and cross-referenced materials (e.g., related playbooks) to inform certain prompts.

Caveats

No explicit licensing terms are stated beyond NOASSERTION in the metadata. The skill content relies on user-provided context for branching decisions and may reference external materials not contained within this skill folder. No guarantees are provided about outcomes; recommendations are contingent on user input and branch-specific logic.

## Purpose Guide Directors and senior product leaders through the specific challenges of the transition to VP or CPO using adaptive questions and targeted coaching. Diagnoses where you are in the journey and delivers practical, lived-experience coaching calibrated to your situation — not generic executive advice. The VP/CPO transition is not a continuation of the Director transition. The landscape changes. Strategy becomes largely unwritten. Your primary customer may shift. You stop using product language with executives. Constraints don't disappear — the Rubik's Cube just goes from 3×3 to 9×9. This advisor names what's actually hard at this level and what to do about it. ## Input **Works best with:** Where you are in the Director-to-VP/CPO journey: preparing, interviewing, newly landed, or recalibrating. **Also useful:** Company stage, whether you'd be (or are) the first product executive, and your relationship with the CEO. Anything supplied with the invocation itself — text after the skill name, a pasted context dump, or an appended `ARGUMENTS:` line — counts as answers already given. Use it and skip whatever it covers; don't re-ask. **Arriving empty-handed? That works too.** Th

About this skill
What does the vp-cpo-readiness-advisor skill do?

Guide the transition to VP or CPO across preparing, interviewing, landing, and recalibrating. Use when executive product scope is changing fast.

How do I install it?

Run `npx skills add deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills --skill vp-cpo-readiness-advisor --agent claude-code` — it drops the skill into your project so the agent can pick it up. Swap the --agent value for codex, cursor or copilot if you use one of those.

Where does this skill come from?

From deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills, a repository with 6,255 stars. We read it straight from the repository tree rather than a submitted listing, so what you see here is what is actually published.

Is a popular skill a good skill?

Not necessarily. Stars measure attention, not adoption — a repository can trend for a week and be abandoned. That is why we show the weekly change from our own snapshots next to the total, instead of a single flattering number.
