What it does

The skill guides users through three phases to produce an optimized, reviewer-facing outline for an academic paper: Platform Analysis to select and learn from sample papers on a target venue; Theoretical Framework for AI-driven literature search, gap identification, and originality assessment; and Outline Optimization to design a reviewer-ready outline with self-assessment and quality gates. It culminates in an optimized detailed outline ready to be used with an accompanying writer skill.

How it works

Phase 1: Platform Analysis

  • Determine or select a target platform (PhilArchive, arXiv, PhilSci-Archive, etc.).
  • Learn from 8-10 representative sample papers via a multi-step search, scoring relevance, diversity, and quality.
  • Extract writing standards and format specifications from sample papers to produce a platform writing standards guide.

Phase 2: Theoretical Framework

  • Phase 2.1 Literature Search (AI-driven): perform multi-round searches (direct primary literature, adjacent fields, classic works) to build a literature base of 35-50 papers.
  • Phase 2.2 Research Gap Identification: identify 3-5 gaps with definitions and 3-5 supporting citations per gap; validate with a gap_analysis.py script; require a Literature_Review_Report.md and Research_Gap_Analysis.md.
  • Phase 2.3 Originality Assessment: conduct similarity analysis, classify innovations, predict impact (output Originality_Assessment_Report.md).
  • Phase 2.4 Core Concepts Discussion: propose 3-5 core concepts and solicit user feedback (Decision Point 2).

Phase 3: Outline Optimization

  • Phase 3.1 Initial Structure Design: create chapter structure and allocate word counts; output Initial_Outline_Draft.md.
  • Phase 3.2 Reviewer-Perspective Self-Assessment: score with 7 dimensions (Argument Clarity, Argument Completeness, Literature Support, Methodological Clarity, Originality Expression, Organization, Platform Fit) totaling up to 35 points; must be >= 28/35 with at least 3-5 concrete issues and improvements.
  • Phase 3.3 Optimization Recommendations: address any dimensions scoring <4/5 with actionable fixes, severities, and impact; allow user choice (Accept, Selective, Modify).
  • Phase 3.4 Final Outline Generation: produce a detailed Markdown outline (Optimized_Detailed_Outline.md) with sections, word allocations, and references; ensure quality gate 3 passes with >=28/35, high-severity issues resolved, and platform conformity.

Complete Output Package

  • Generates standards guide, evaluation reports, literature and gap analyses, originality report, reviewer assessment, and the final optimized outline.
  • Ready to proceed to academic-paper-composer to write the full paper.
