What it does
This skill guides an in-house legal operations professional through end-to-end RFP and pitch management for outside counsel. It enables drafting a new legal services RFP, distributing it to firms, evaluating responses against weighted criteria, producing a shortlist recommendation with selection rationale for GC sign-off, and designing end-to-end RFP processes from scratch. It supports panel RFPs, matter-specific pitches, and market checks, with trigger phrases to initiate the workflow.
How it works
- Uses Mode 1 (Draft RFP) to produce three primary documents and a cover communication:
- The RFP (.docx) with five mandatory sections and calibrated to the RFP type and maturity level; includes scoring guidance.
- Evaluation Scorecard Template (.docx / .csv) with columns: Firm | Criterion | Weight | Score (1–5) | Weighted Score | Notes.
- GC Briefing Note (.docx) — one-page summary of purpose, invited firms, evaluation approach, timeline, and sign-off.
- Cover letter / email text (in chat) — framed as a positive step in the relationship.
- If inputs are missing, the skill uses inline placeholders and assumptions, then proceeds to output. It provides the RFP structure template with sections on introduction, services, evaluation criteria, pricing, staffing, technology, D&I, outside counsel guidelines, response instructions, and timeline.
- RFPs follow a maturity-based approach: Early outputs include essential sections; AI pricing is treated as a 2026 minimum standard; additional sections can be expanded for higher maturities.
- RFP type routing and jurisdiction guidance are defined, including default UK/GBP references with US and AU adaptations available.
When to use it
Trigger phrases include: 'draft an RFP', 'run an RFP process', 'evaluate firm responses', 'score the RFP submissions', 'which firms should we shortlist', 'selection recommendation', 'how do we run a panel RFP', 'RFP for legal services', 'pitch process', 'firm selection process', among others. If RFP type is unclear, the system infers intent and documents are produced with inline placeholders.
What it can touch
- Tools: claude-code (declared)
- Output artifacts: RFP document (.docx), Evaluation Scorecard Template (.docx / .csv), GC Briefing Note (.docx), Cover letter text (chat).
Caveats
- License: NOASSERTION
- The approach assumes the user is an in-house legal operations manager or in-house lawyer responsible for firm selection.
- Outputs may include placeholders for missing inputs; the skill states inline placeholders and does not halt output for missing fields.
- Jurisdiction guidance defaults to UK/GBP but can be adapted to US or Australian markets with corresponding benchmarks.
# RFP and Pitch Management You are an Outside Counsel Management skill that helps in-house legal teams run structured RFP processes for selecting outside counsel — from drafting the initial document through evaluating responses and producing a selection recommendation. ## Who uses this skill The primary user is an **in-house legal operations manager** or **in-house lawyer** responsible for managing the firm selection process. They may be running a full panel RFP (refreshing or building the panel), a matter-specific pitch (selecting a firm for a significant transaction or dispute), or a targeted market check (testing whether their incumbent is still competitive on price and service). This skill helps the user in two directions: **Outward — to the firms.** The RFP is what firms respond to. Quality, clarity, and structured criteria in the RFP directly determine the quality and comparability of responses received. **Upward — to the GC.** The selection recommendation is what the GC sees. It must be defensible, free of perceived bias, and framed in terms of legal and commercial risk, not procurement methodology. ## Why this matters An average law firm spends 47 hours on an RFP response (

How do I install it?
Run `npx skills add lawve-ai/awesome-legal-skills --skill rfp-pitch-management-scott-margetts --agent claude-code` — it drops the skill into your project so the agent can pick it up. Swap the --agent value for codex, cursor or copilot if you use one of those.
Where does this skill come from?
From lawve-ai/awesome-legal-skills, a repository with 618 stars. We read it straight from the repository tree rather than a submitted listing, so what you see here is what is actually published.
Is a popular skill a good skill?
Not necessarily. Stars measure attention, not adoption — a repository can trend for a week and be abandoned. That is why we show the weekly change from our own snapshots next to the total, instead of a single flattering number.
