jop-writing-style

Use when shaping prose, length, and formatting for a The Journal of Politics (JOP) manuscript. JOP counts pages, not words — Research Article <= 35 and Short Article <= 10, double-spaced 12-point, inclusive of notes, references, and exhibits — and follows the JOP Style Guide under double-blind review. Polishes and fits to length; it does not draft the substance.

From the SKILL.md

# Writing Style & Length (jop-writing-style) JOP's binding constraint is **pages, not words**. The same paper that clears an APSR or AJPS word cap can still overflow JOP's **35-page** (Research Article) or **10-page** (Short Article) budget — because the count is **double-spaced, 12-point** and **includes notes, references, and exhibits**. This skill makes the paper read for a general audience and **fit the page**, in **JOP Style Guide** form, kept anonymous. ## When to trigger - Polishing a draft for clarity and general-interest readability - The manuscript is over the page budget and must be cut - Formatting references and headings to the JOP Style Guide - A final anonymity pass before `jop-submission` ## Fit the page budget (the JOP-specific discipline) - **Count pages, not words.** Format to JOP's spec — **double-spaced, 12-pt, one-inch margins** — and measure the real page count, because exhibits, footnotes, and the reference list all count. - **Move overflow to the Online Appendix (≤ 25 pp).** Robustness, derivations, extra cases, and method detail belong there; the main text must still stand on its own. - **Cut footnotes hard.** Notes count toward the limit — fold what matte

About this skill
What does the jop-writing-style skill do?

Use when shaping prose, length, and formatting for a The Journal of Politics (JOP) manuscript. JOP counts pages, not words — Research Article <= 35 and Short Article <= 10, double-spaced 12-point, inclusive of notes, references, and exhibits — and follows the JOP Style Guide under double-blind review. Polishes and fits to length; it does not draft the substance.

How do I install it?

Run `npx skills add brycewang-stanford/Awesome-Journal-Skills --skill jop-writing-style --agent claude-code` — it drops the skill into your project so the agent can pick it up. Swap the --agent value for codex, cursor or copilot if you use one of those.

Where does this skill come from?

From brycewang-stanford/Awesome-Journal-Skills, a repository with 909 stars. We read it straight from the repository tree rather than a submitted listing, so what you see here is what is actually published.

Is a popular skill a good skill?

Not necessarily. Stars measure attention, not adoption — a repository can trend for a week and be abandoned. That is why we show the weekly change from our own snapshots next to the total, instead of a single flattering number.
