# Ecosystem Dynamics An ecosystem is the functional unit of ecology — a community of organisms together with the physical environment they share, bounded loosely by patterns of energy flow and nutrient cycling. This skill covers the organizing principles of ecosystem structure and dynamics: how energy enters through primary production, how it dissipates through trophic levels, how communities assemble and recover from disturbance, and why species richness functions as insurance against change.
