This skill provides tools and strategies for searching academic databases (Google Scholar, PubMed), extracting accurate metadata from multiple sources (CrossRef, PubMed, arXiv), validating citation information, and generating properly formatted BibTeX entries.
How it works
- Phase 1: Paper Discovery and Search — uses Google Scholar and PubMed searches with basic and advanced queries, exporting results to JSON files.
- Phase 2: Metadata Extraction — converts paper identifiers (DOI, PMID, arXiv ID) to complete metadata using dedicated scripts; supports extraction from DOI, PMID, arXiv, and URL; pulls data from CrossRef, PubMed E-utilities, arXiv, and DataCite.
- Phase 2.5: Metadata Enrichment via Web Search (MANDATORY) — scans for incomplete BibTeX entries and fills missing fields by web searches using multiple options (title/author search, DOI page extraction, CrossRef search, Google Scholar search); logs fixes and handles unresolved cases with notes.
- Phase 3: BibTeX Formatting — formats BibTeX entries, supports common types (@article, @inproceedings, @book, etc.), and provides commands to format, sort, deduplicate, and validate entries.
- Phase 4: Citation Validation — validates DOIs, required fields, data consistency, duplicates, and format compliance; can auto-fix and produce validation reports.
- Phase 5: Integration with Writing Workflow — end-to-end workflow for building references, including search, metadata extraction, formatting, and validation steps.
