What it does

The skill simulates a complete international journal peer review process by identifying the paper's field and dynamically configuring five reviewer personas (Editor-in-Chief, three peer reviewers, and a Devil's Advocate) who review from four non-overlapping perspectives: methodology, domain expertise, cross-disciplinary viewpoints, and core argument challenges. It outputs five independent review reports, an Editorial Decision Letter, and a Revision Roadmap.

How it works

  • Phase 0: FIELD ANALYSIS & PERSONA CONFIGURATION
    • Reads the complete paper, identifies primary/secondary discipline, research paradigm, methodology type, target journal tier, paper maturity.
    • Dynamically generates reviewer identities for 5 reviewers: EIC, Methodology Reviewer, Domain Reviewer, Perspective Reviewer, Devil's Advocate.
    • Presents Reviewer Configuration to user for confirmation (adjustable).
  • Phase 1: PARALLEL MULTI-PERSPECTIVE REVIEW
    • EIC Review Report: assesses journal fit, originality, overall quality; does not deep-dive into methodology.
    • Methodology Review Report: evaluates research design, sampling, data collection, analysis, reproducibility.
    • Domain Review Report: checks literature coverage, theoretical framework, contribution, missing references.
    • Perspective Review Report: examines cross-disciplinary connections, practical impact, ethical implications.
    • Devil's Advocate Review Report: challenges core arguments, detects logical gaps, analyzes counter-arguments.
  • Phase 2: EDITORIAL SYNTHESIS & DECISION
    • Editorial Synthesizer aggregates five reports, notes consensus/disagreement, flags Devil's Advocate issues, outputs Editorial Decision Letter and Revision Roadmap.
  • Phase 2.5: REVISION COACHING (Socratic Revision Guidance)
    • If decision requires revision, EIC guides through Socratic dialogue to form a revision strategy and roadmap; can be skipped with "just fix it".

Modes

  • full: all seven agents produce five reviews + decision + roadmap
  • re-review: verification of revisions; EIC + editorial synthesizer produce a revision checklist and new decision
  • quick: EIC quick assessment and key issues list (15-minute version)
  • methodology-focus: in-depth methodology review
  • guided: Socratic, issue-by-issue guided review with dialogue

Trigger and inputs

  • Activated by phrases like "Review this paper", "peer review", "simulate review", etc.
  • Phase 0 presents reviewer configuration for user adjustments; Phase 1 reviews occur independently; Phase 2 synthesizes results; Phase 2.5 offers Socratic guidance when revision is needed.

About this skill
What does the academic-paper-reviewer skill do?

Multi-perspective academic paper review with dynamic reviewer personas. Simulates 5 independent reviewers (EIC + 3 peer reviewers + Devil's Advocate) with field-specific expertise. Supports full review, re-review (verification), quick assessment, methodology focus, and Socratic guided modes. Triggers on: review paper, peer review, manuscript review, referee report, review my paper, critique paper, simulate review, editorial review.

How do I install it?

Run `npx skills add brycewang-stanford/Auto-Empirical-Research-Skills --skill academic-paper-reviewer --agent claude-code` — it drops the skill into your project so the agent can pick it up. Swap the --agent value for codex, cursor or copilot if you use one of those.

Where does this skill come from?

From brycewang-stanford/Auto-Empirical-Research-Skills, a repository with 3,244 stars. We read it straight from the repository tree rather than a submitted listing, so what you see here is what is actually published.

Is a popular skill a good skill?

Not necessarily. Stars measure attention, not adoption — a repository can trend for a week and be abandoned. That is why we show the weekly change from our own snapshots next to the total, instead of a single flattering number.
