Die Kompilatoren interpolierten — Textänderungen zur Anpassung an das Recht des 6. Jh. (klassisches Beispiel: mancipatio durchgängig durch traditio ersetzt). Die Interpolationenkritik (Ende 19./20. Jh.) versuchte die klassischen Originale zu rekonstruieren — heute gilt methodische Zurückhaltung: Nicht jede Glättung ist Interpolation.
